DNC Issues Ultimatum to David Hogg

DNC Chair Ken Martin is set to unveil a proposal aimed at ensuring DNC officers maintain neutrality in all Democratic primaries.

DNC Issues Ultimatum to David Hogg
The Democratic National Committee is poised to put David Hogg in a challenging position: either exit the primary arena or forfeit his role within the DNC.

During a member call scheduled for Thursday, DNC Chair Ken Martin is expected to reveal a proposal aimed at altering the party's rules to require all DNC officers to remain neutral in Democratic primaries. This information comes from a source with knowledge of the discussions who spoke on the condition of confidentiality. This development follows Hogg's recent commitment to allocate millions toward supporting challenges against “asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats in primaries, which has sparked significant backlash within the DNC.

Should this proposal pass at the DNC's meeting in August, it would essentially compel Hogg to choose between relinquishing his vice chair role or distancing himself from his co-founded group, Leaders We Deserve, which aims to spend $20 million on contests against Democratic incumbents in solidly blue districts.

This situation has intensified the ongoing tension between Hogg and various DNC leaders, as well as House Democrats, many of whom expressed outrage over Hogg's declaration. Hogg, who gained national attention as a gun safety advocate following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, stated last week his intention to support candidates challenging “ineffective” incumbents. However, numerous House members and party leaders have criticized Hogg’s actions as igniting a “circular firing squad” within the party.

In a recent interview, Hogg expressed his determination to “fight to remain in this position,” although he has also indicated to at least two fellow Democrats that he is open to the possibility of stepping down from his vice chair role during this process.

Martin is expected to present additional reforms aimed at increasing transparency within the party during his announcement on Thursday. NOTUS was the first to report on the proposal regarding the expansion of the party's neutrality rules.

“This isn’t about David,” stated Jane Kleeb, president of the Association of State Democratic Parties. “This is about a bigger reform package that will be presented to DNC members that Ken ran on and that we've been pushing inside the DNC for a decade,” she added.

DNC members will cast their votes on this proposal, which would amend the party's rules and bylaws, during their meeting in August.
