According to a report from the Wall Street Journal on Friday, US President-elect Donald Trump is eyeing Larry Kudlow, host of Fox Business Network, for a senior economic policy position in his upcoming administration. Kudlow previously held the role of director of the National Economic Council for three years during Trump’s first term. Advisers to Trump view him as a possible candidate to lead either the NEC or the Treasury, as noted by the WSJ. Kudlow has maintained regular contact with Trump and was reportedly a guest at Mar-a-Lago in Florida this week.
However, Bloomberg mentioned on Friday that according to its own sources, Kudlow has informed Trump’s team that he does not wish to take a job in the administration. Kudlow reportedly declined to comment, according to Bloomberg.
The WSJ explains that the 77-year-old financial commentator is under consideration partly due to a “cold war” between two other candidates for top economic positions in Trump’s administration. The candidates in question are Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick and hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, both of whom have made significant efforts to lead the Treasury, which has supposedly “irritated” Trump, as reported by the magazine's unnamed advisers.
Lutnick, who co-chairs the Trump transition team, is said to have approached the president-elect directly about the Treasury position. Meanwhile, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has publicly endorsed Bessent as an “outstanding” choice for Treasury secretary.
Additionally, Trump has discussed the possibility of appointing Robert Lighthizer, who served as trade envoy during his first term, and Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan for senior economic roles, according to the WSJ. Earlier reports indicated that Trump could select Lighthizer again for the role of trade czar.
Trump has committed to pursuing an aggressive tariff policy aimed at advancing US economic interests, particularly concerning China. During his first term, Trump initiated a trade war with Beijing, resulting in both nations imposing tariffs and sanctions on each other.
