Truce Between Israel and Hezbollah Begins
The US-brokered ceasefire was announced on Tuesday following tense negotiations.

A ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanon-based armed group Hezbollah took effect at 4 am local time on Wednesday, with no immediate reports of violations.

Israeli Defence Forces spokesman Avichay Adraee informed reporters that Israeli troops would remain in southern Lebanon for the time being. He cautioned that it is not safe for Israelis who fled border towns due to Hezbollah rocket fire to return yet.

The conflict between Hezbollah and the IDF started in October 2023 when the pro-Palestinian armed group began launching rockets and mortar shells across the border. Hezbollah indicated at that time that hostilities would not cease until Israel halts its actions against Hamas in Gaza.

In early October, Israel launched an invasion of southern Lebanon and intensified airstrikes on Beirut and other cities, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking Hezbollah members, including the group’s longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

According to officials from both sides, Hezbollah attacks have resulted in the deaths of more than 60 people in Israel, while Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon have killed over 3,500 since October 2023. Approximately 70,000 people in Israel and around 1.2 million in Lebanon have been displaced as a result of the conflict.

In announcing the ceasefire on Tuesday, outgoing US President Joe Biden stated that Israel would “gradually withdraw its remaining forces” from Lebanon within the next 60 days. He emphasized that “Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon will not be allowed to be rebuilt.” Biden affirmed that the truce is intended to be permanent.
