SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reportedly overstaying his welcome at US President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and “behaving as if he’s a co-president,” according to sources close to the election winner who spoke with NBC News. Trump's team has dismissed claims of any friction between the two.
Musk joined Trump at Mar-a-Lago on election night and has spent a significant portion of the week at the Florida resort, providing support to the transition team. The tech leader has offered opinions on Trump’s cabinet selections and participated in calls with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reportedly engaging directly with Zelensky at one point.
Musk's close association with Trump appears to have irked some members of the president-elect’s transition staff, as indicated by a source at Mar-a-Lago who spoke to NBC News on Wednesday.
“And he’s sure taking lots of credit for the president’s victory. Bragging about America PAC and X to anyone who will listen. He’s trying to make President Trump feel indebted to him. And the president is indebted to no one,” the source remarked.
A second source noted that Musk has an “opinion on and about everything” and that his tendency to share these views has begun to annoy Trump’s senior aides. “He wants to be seen as having a say in everything,” the source explained, adding that Musk's assertive lobbying could jeopardize his standing with the president-elect over time.
In recent days, multiple sources close to Trump have been sharing a stream of transition-related updates with the media. The accuracy of this information, particularly concerning Musk, remains uncertain, especially given Trump’s favorable comments about the entrepreneur.
"Elon Musk is a great guy, loaded with personality and ‘brainpower’,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday. “He is definitely a high IQ person, which is the reason that his really strong endorsement meant so much to me, and to MAGA. He’s at a beautiful Mar-a-Lago concert right now, and the crowd absolutely loves him,” Trump added, emphasizing that Musk’s contribution to his victory “will never be forgotten.”
“Elon Musk and President Trump are great friends and brilliant leaders working together to Make America Great Again. Elon Musk is a once in a generation business leader and our federal bureaucracy will certainly benefit from his ideas and efficiency,” a spokesperson for Trump told NBC.
During a meeting with House Republicans on Wednesday morning, Trump humorously remarked, “Elon won’t go home. I can’t get rid of him.” However, he followed up by praising Musk for his significant investment of time and resources into the campaign. Republican lawmakers informed NBC that Trump's comment about Musk “won’t go home” was made in a light-hearted manner.
On Tuesday, Trump nominated Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Although not an official federal agency, DOGE will “provide advice and guidance” to the White House and the Office of Management and Budget on how to eliminate regulations, reduce government spending, and restructure various agencies, Trump stated in a release.
