EU mulls 25% retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. products

On Monday, the European Union (EU) suggested a 25-percent tariff on certain U.S. products as a countermeasure to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum. This information was reported by Reuters and Bloomberg, based on an internal document circulated among EU member states.

The European Union proposed a 25-percent tariff on select U.S. products on Monday, a response to President Donald Trump's recent decision to impose duties on European steel and aluminum, according to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg, which cited an internal document shared with EU member states.

According to Reuters, some of the retaliatory tariffs are set to take effect on May 16.

The list of targeted goods is diverse, including diamonds, eggs, dental floss, sausages, and poultry. However, items like bourbon, wine, and dairy, which were previously considered, have been excluded from the final list, as reported by Reuters.

Earlier on Monday, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic confirmed that a list of countermeasures would be distributed to EU member states. A vote on the initial set of retaliatory measures is planned for April 9, with implementation anticipated by April 15.

While expressing the EU's preference for negotiation, Sefcovic underlined the bloc's readiness to utilize "every tool" to protect itself from the effects of U.S. tariffs if discussions fail.

"We are prepared to use every tool in our trade defense arsenal to protect the EU single market, EU producers and EU consumers," he stated.

The 27-nation bloc is currently facing 25-percent import tariffs on steel and aluminum as well as cars, and will see broader tariffs of 20 percent on nearly all other goods starting Wednesday due to Trump's policy aimed at countries he claims impose high barriers to U.S. imports.

On Monday evening, the EU Commission clarified that the initial retaliatory tariffs of 25 percent on U.S. imports are a direct consequence of Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs rather than the broader tariffs.
