The 23-year-old Chinese player advanced through qualifying, defeating Nicolai Budkov Kjaer and Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Displaying impressive net play, he executed a tweener against Musetti on his way to winning the first set 6-4.
Buyunchaokete had previously defeated the 13th seed in their last encounter at the China Open. In this match, he attempted a drop shot that Musetti easily retrieved, allowing the Italian to claim the second set 7-5.
Musetti then sealed the third set with a well-constructed rally, finishing at 6-3 on match point. He will now face Jiri Lehecka in the second round, having lost both of their prior meetings with the Czech Republic's World No. 28.
In other matches, ninth seed Daniil Medvedev triumphed over fellow Russian Karen Khachanov. Medvedev won the first set 7-5 after Khachanov hit long. However, World No. 25 Khachanov rallied to take the second set 6-4.
In the third set, Medvedev surged ahead, racing to match point and ultimately winning the set 6-4, with Khachanov’s unforced error sealing the match.
Having faced an early exit at last month's Miami Open, which dropped him from the Top 10, the 29-year-old Medvedev is now back on track on clay as he seeks his first title since the Rome Masters two years ago. He will next take on Frenchman Alexandre Muller.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Tabilo from Chile bounced back from a slow start to defeat three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. The 40-year-old Swiss player, a 2014 tournament champion, was aiming for his second Tour-level victory this season. Despite starting strong, Tabilo displayed impressive resilience to recover and maintain his composure after initially losing his lead in the final set.
Tabilo will next face Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who is still in pursuit of his first title since winning at last summer's Paris Olympics.
