Despite his minimal salary, Durov's wealth is estimated at $15.5 billion by Forbes, ranking him as the 122nd richest person globally. Meanwhile, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index positions him at 306th, citing his net worth as $9.07 billion.
Durov is known for his ascetic lifestyle. Le Monde highlights that he advocates for a life devoid of coffee, alcohol, meat, dairy, and medication, emphasizing practices like ice bathing and meditation through his social media.
This disclosure about his income reportedly came during police questioning in Paris at the end of the previous month.
In 2017, Durov relocated Telegram’s headquarters to Dubai. At that time, in an interview with Bloomberg, he mentioned that tax exemptions influenced his choice to move to the Middle East. He has since become a citizen of the UAE, France, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
In a rare interview with the Financial Times last March, Durov, who is the sole owner of the widely used Telegram messaging service, revealed that the company had been valued by potential investors at over $30 billion. He dismissed the idea of selling Telegram but indicated an interest in exploring a future initial public offering.
Durov was detained in France in August, facing charges including refusal to cooperate with authorities and managing an online platform allegedly used for criminal activities. He was subsequently released on a €5 million bail and is currently under a travel ban while the case progresses.
