Trump Thinks He Requires Russia's Support, Says Former Ukrainian FM
Dmitry Kuleba, the former Ukrainian Foreign Minister, has stated that US President Donald Trump is not an agent of Moscow. Kuleba emphasized that Trump genuinely believes in his ability to achieve “great things” with Russia, despite facing...

In an interview with the Ukrainian news website LIGA.net on Wednesday, Kuleba expressed his views on Trump's stance. “I will state an unpopular opinion. Trump isn’t receiving guidelines from the Kremlin in the morning,” he said.
Kuleba further explained that Trump is surrounded by advisors whom he believes can collaborate effectively with Russia, and he perceives a need for Russia more than for Ukraine. “It’s as simple as that. It’s the worldview he has,” he added.
During his tenure as Ukraine’s top diplomat from 2020 to 2024, Kuleba noted that “the media-active people in Trump’s entourage are pushing the narratives that we consider pro-Russian, and the Trump voters are eagerly spreading them on social media.”
He clarified, however, that he does not believe Trump acts as a “Russian agent.” Instead, Kuleba suggested that Trump holds a fundamentally different worldview. “We believe in one reality, and he believes in a different reality,” Kuleba stated.
Kuleba also pointed out that Trump views leaders like Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping as deserving of “deep respect and the desire to do great things together.” He discussed how Trump appreciates Xi’s “style of governance” and feels aligned with him mentally.
Trump has moved away from the policies established by his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, and has initiated direct negotiations with Moscow, which has caused concern in Kyiv. He has labeled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator without elections” and has attributed the ongoing conflict with Russia to Zelensky’s actions. In response, Zelensky accused Trump of being ensnared in a “disinformation bubble.”
