West aims to 'exert dominance' through nuclear talks, says Khamenei
Iran’s supreme leader has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s threats of military action.

On Saturday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that the West is attempting to leverage negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear program to establish its dominance. This remark followed Trump’s indication that the US might consider using force against the Islamic Republic.

“Some coercive governments insist on negotiations. Such negotiations aren’t aimed at solving issues. Their aim is to exert their dominance and impose what they want,” Khamenei asserted in an English-language post on X.

He also challenged the claims made by “three European countries,” stating, “They issue statements claiming that Iran hasn’t fulfilled its nuclear commitments under the JCPOA! Someone from this side should ask them, have you fulfilled yours?!”

During his first term, Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and reinstated sanctions against Iran. In response, Tehran reduced its compliance with the agreement.

In a recent Fox Business interview, Trump noted, “there are two ways Iran can be handled: militarily, or you make a deal.” He previously mentioned sending a letter to Khamenei suggesting a reopening of negotiations. “I’ve written them a letter saying, ‘I hope you’re going to negotiate because if we have to go in militarily, it’s going to be a terrible thing,’” Trump told Fox.

Earlier in the week, International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Mariano Grossi reported that Iran has again increased its stockpile of enriched uranium. On Wednesday, the UK, France, and Germany issued a joint statement urging Tehran to “halt and reverse its nuclear escalation” and return to full compliance with the JCPOA.

Tehran has maintained that the US and its European allies must first address the sanctions imposed by Trump. “Any allegation regarding Iran’s implementation of its JCPOA commitments is fundamentally flawed when divorced from the full context of the US withdrawal,” Iran’s envoy to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, stated in December 2024, emphasizing that Iran would revert to full compliance if the sanctions were lifted.
