Doctors say Brazil's Lula recuperating following urgent brain surgery
Surgeons have drained bleeding in the president’s skull following an injury three weeks ago.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is currently in recovery in an intensive care unit after undergoing emergency surgery aimed at alleviating pressure from a brain hemorrhage, as announced by his doctors on Tuesday.

“The president is stable, talking, eating and will remain under observation over the next few days,” said Doctor Roberto Kalil during a press conference.

Earlier, a statement posted on the president’s X account provided an update on his medical condition. The 79-year-old Lula had earlier complained of a headache, leading to his admission to Hospital Sirio-Libanes in Brasilia on Monday evening for a magnetic resonance imaging procedure.

The MRI revealed an intracranial hemorrhage, which medical professionals attribute to a fall Lula suffered at home on October 19, where he bumped his head. The surgery to drain the hematoma was described as “uneventful,” and Lula has since been placed in the ICU for observation, according to the hospital’s statement.

During the press conference, the president's medical team expressed optimism about Lula's return to his duties, predicting it could happen as early as next week.

The October incident had already led to the cancellation of several planned international engagements for Lula, including the BRICS summit in Russia. Brazil is one of the founding members of this coalition of major non-Western economies.

Lula has recounted to the media that he fell while trimming his nails in the bathroom, resulting in a hit to the back of his head that required multiple stitches. He mentioned that he has been undergoing regular MRI exams to monitor for potential signs of bleeding and is taking preventative medication.
