Russian hockey sensation Alexander Ovechkin has further enhanced his record goal tally in the National Hockey League by netting a goal in the Washington Capitals’ last regular-season matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.

Earlier this month, the 39-year-old Capitals forward broke the longstanding NHL record set by Canadian hockey icon Wayne Gretzky, marking his 895th goal during a game against the New York Islanders.

Ovechkin maintained his impressive performance on Thursday against the Penguins, contributing three additional points, including his 897th career goal, which occurred in the second period.

Although the game concluded with a 5-2 victory for the Penguins, they honored Ovechkin with a video presentation, congratulating him on becoming the NHL’s goal king. Pittsburgh players Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin also took the opportunity to meet Ovechkin outside the Capitals’ locker room after the game and presented him with a Rolex watch.

After the Russian star broke Gretzky’s record earlier this month, he received congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who recognized Ovechkin’s “outstanding achievement.” US President Donald Trump similarly praised Ovechkin as a “great player” and a “gentleman.”

Ovechkin is a three-time world champion with the Russian national team and secured the 2018 Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals, the organization where he has spent his entire NHL career.

In light of his milestone accomplishment, the Russian Embassy in the US highlighted that “literally all of America” had rallied around Ovechkin’s quest to surpass Gretzky's record, which had remained intact since 1999. The embassy also observed a growing interest in a prospective match between Russian and North American teams.

The notion of a Russia-US hockey match was even discussed between Trump and Putin during their phone call on March 18. According to the Kremlin, the two leaders deliberated on the possibility of hosting a series of games featuring American and Russian players from the NHL and Russia’s KHL.
