China 'inviting' US to arms competition with latest fighter jets, says military researcher
Beijing’s recently unveiled experimental aircraft is sending a powerful message to competitors, as highlighted by Dmitry Stefanovich in an interview with RT.

The images of China's latest warplanes, which surfaced online this week, represent a bold “invitation” to an arms race regarding next-generation fighters, according to Dmitry Stefanovich, a military researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Videos and photos shared on social media on December 26 reveal two previously unseen tailless jets: one larger, diamond-shaped aircraft and a smaller jet with an arrow-wing-shaped design. While Beijing has yet to comment publicly, the images have ignited discussions in the international media, with some experts speculating that these aircraft may represent the first sixth-generation fighter planes.

“So far, we have only seen two variants of experimental aircraft,” Stefanovich stated. “Presumably, one of them can be tailored for strike missions that involve attacks on ground and, perhaps, naval targets, while another one is tasked with dominating the skies and controlling the airspace.”

The posted footage “demonstrates the general state of the development” of Chinese aircraft rather than indicating specific capabilities of sixth-generation planes, the expert noted. He pointed out that ‘sixth generation’ is a “loosely applied term,” cautioning that it is premature to make definitive assessments about the new aircraft's capabilities.

Stefanovich emphasized that Beijing will be facing competition from American next-generation fighter programs. “While there are no game-changers on the horizon, China is explicitly inviting to participate in an arms race, at least in terms of quality,” he remarked.

He also reminded that the US remains the only nation with an advanced program for a new strategic bomber, the B-21, which can be adapted for some capabilities associated with sixth-generation technology. “The Chinese and Russian planes of comparable type have not taken off the ground yet,” Stefanovich added.
