China declares month-long virtual shopping festival for Spring Festival
China is set to initiate a month-long online shopping event focused on festive goods in anticipation of the upcoming Spring Festival, scheduled for January 29 this year.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Commerce along with several government entities and the China Consumers Association, will take place from January 7 to February 5.
According to the ministry, this initiative is the first nationwide online sales promotion after the recognition of the "Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of traditional new year" as part of the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024.
The primary goals of the event include fulfilling consumer needs during the festive period, promoting traditional Chinese culture, and increasing e-commerce sales.
A launch ceremony is scheduled for January 7 in Jiujiang, a city located in east China's Jiangxi Province. This ceremony will feature various activities such as displays of festive goods and exhibitions that celebrate intangible cultural heritage.
Different regions across China and various e-commerce platforms are planning unique events to honor the Spring Festival. These will include promotions of local products, as well as exhibitions and performances focused on intangible cultural heritage, as stated by the ministry.
For example, beginning January 22, Shanghai will host a Silk Road e-commerce Spring Festival event aimed at promoting tourism products for visitors coming to China for the festivities.
Additionally, festive goods will be made available on the global versions of several e-commerce platforms, catering to the needs of overseas Chinese and international customers.
