US President Joe Biden has expressed his frustration towards Republicans for backing Donald Trump’s commitment to tax cuts for the wealthy.
During a campaign stop in Scranton, Pennsylvania, his hometown, Biden criticized Trump's tax promises and took aim at “macho guys” who endorse them. His comments were made in support of Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for the upcoming election.
“There’s one more thing Trump and his Republican friends want to do. They want to have a giant tax cut for the wealthy,” Biden stated to members of a carpenters' union. He indicated that there may be a tendency for some to view these supporters as “macho guys,” seemingly referring to Trump’s base.
“I tell you what, man, when I was in Scranton, we used to have a little trouble going down the plot once in a while. These are the kind of guys you’d like to smack in the ass,” he remarked, his demeanor intense as he showed gritted teeth and clenched fists. “By the way, I’m serious,” he added.
Throughout his campaign, Trump has proposed numerous tax reductions alongside increases in tariffs on imported goods, including a 20% cut in the corporate tax rate. He has also promised to eliminate taxes on overtime pay and tips for service workers and sought to make Social Security benefits for seniors tax-free.
Earlier this week, Biden sparked controversy when he labeled Republican supporters “garbage” and accused Trump of creating divisions in the country "based on the race." In response, the White House adjusted the transcript, citing “a difference in interpretation,” while Biden noted that his comments were in reaction to “hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico” from Trump supporters at a rally in Madison Square Garden.
Both Democratic and Republican factions have a history of confrontational rhetoric, with Trump frequently describing Harris as a “low IQ individual” and characterizing her policies as “plans of a simpleton.” Conversely, Harris has accused Trump of relentless dishonesty and labeled him a “petty tyrant.”
