Polish PM Declares End of US Geopolitical Control Over EU
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has asserted that the bloc should not focus on the imminent outcome of the US elections but instead take control of its own security. He emphasized that the era of European countries “outsourcing” their security to the United States is over, regardless of whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump wins the presidential election.

Tusk, who previously led the European Council from 2014 to 2019, shared his thoughts in a post on X shortly before the US election set for November 5. He stated, “Harris or Trump? Some claim that the future of Europe depends on the American elections, while it depends first and foremost on us.”

The prime minister highlighted that for the EU to effectively take matters into its own hands, it must “finally grow up and believe in its own strength.” He reiterated, “Whatever the outcome [of the US election], the era of geopolitical outsourcing is over” for Europe.

In an article published by the Financial Times, it was noted that “many Europeans lose sleep at night” contemplating a Trump victory and the potential threat it poses to US security assurances to its allies, such as NATO and the nuclear umbrella. The article further mentioned that “European supporters of Ukraine also worry that he might try to settle the war there on terms that amounted, in effect, to a victory for Vladimir Putin’s Russia.”

Most Europeans reportedly would “feel more comfortable” with a Harris presidency. Throughout her campaign, the Democratic candidate has promised “ironclad” support for NATO, continued backing for Ukraine, and underscored the significance of America’s alliances.

A recent poll conducted by the Savanta research company across Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland revealed that the majority in these countries believe a Harris presidency “would be best for European security.” Trust in the Democratic candidate was highest in Spain and lowest in Poland.

Meanwhile, David McAllister, head of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, remarked to Deutsche Welle that the EU must prepare for both potential election outcomes. He claimed, “The tone would be different, but I am certain a Harris administration would also call for Europeans to do more for our own security and defense.”
