We're expanding our California coverage to meet audience demand
POLITICO will cover California not from Washington or for Washington, but from inside the state and on its own terms.
When POLITICO moved beyond Washington to cover some of the most influential state capitals and European power centers nearly a decade ago, California was an obvious target.
The state’s status as the world’s fifth largest economy and a trailblazer on policy made it critical to our reporting and tailor-made for our brand of coverage.
Since then, our California audience has become a critical part of our readership and demanded even more from us — more high impact coverage of the political characters and drama shaping California, more reporting on the policy and regulatory decisions coming from Sacramento and more on the dynamics in Los Angeles, San Francisco and beyond.
POLITICO’s newest phase of growth in California is geared toward meeting that demand. We want to become the leading publication covering politics, policy and power in the Golden State, at a time when state governments have become key drivers of political and policy conversations.
The launch of POLITICO’s new California home marks the official start of our biggest expansion yet in the state.
It will be the go-to place for our sophisticated coverage of politics both statewide and Sacramento-specific as well as our in-depth policy reporting on topics ranging from health care and education to climate and housing.
The site will include stories about the power players and political characters of Los Angeles and southern California, which are key to our long-term ambitions in the state.
You will also find our three California-focused newsletters on the page:
- California Playbook, our first entry point into the state in 2015 and our early morning must-read for insiders who need to understand the characters and dynamics driving politics and policy in Sacramento and beyond
- California Climate, our newest newsletter, will obsess over the political and legislative dynamics around climate change in the state
- California Playbook PM, the late-afternoon companion that tells subscribers what’s happening right now – and why it matters
While POLITICO began life as a Washington upstart, we’ve become a global publication by understanding our readers’ needs in the power centers we cover. From Brussels to London to New York we deliver distinctive reporting that captures and drives the political and policy conversation.
We will cover California not from Washington or for Washington, but from inside the state and on its own terms.
Our expansion also means more for Pro subscribers with California legislative analysis and more penetrating policy pieces.
Our deeply sourced reporters have one mission: Pulling back the curtain on the dynamics at play around the state and the central characters in the Sacramento policy and political drama.
We’ve repeatedly heard from our readers, often the people making the news, that they’re hungry for more informed and informative coverage of the state that reflects its prominent place in the nation and around the globe.
We’re so excited about the opportunity to deliver that. We hope you enjoy the ride.
