The suspect has been arrested following a manhunt that lasted several hours.

German police have captured the individual accused of stabbing a Spanish tourist near Berlin’s renowned Holocaust memorial on Friday.

The incident occurred in the Mitte district of the German capital, just two days prior to the Bundestag election.

As reported by the news agency RBB, the suspect unexpectedly attacked a man within the field of concrete slabs that constitutes the monument dedicated to the Jews who perished under Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. The Spanish national was hospitalized and is currently in stable condition.

Later that same day, the suspect approached a group of police officers. Police spokesman Florian Nath informed reporters that the assailant was found with blood on his hands at the time of his arrest.

“There is no information about the man’s identity as of yet. The weapon has not been recovered,” Nath said.

Germany has experienced a surge in terrorist attacks in recent months. In December, a Saudi-born anti-Islam activist drove an SUV into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, resulting in six fatalities and injuring at least 299 others. In August 2024, a Syrian refugee fatally stabbed three individuals in Solingen, and just last month, an Afghan asylum seeker killed two people, including a toddler, in Aschaffenburg.

On February 13, yet another Afghan asylum seeker drove a vehicle into a trade union demonstration in Munich, claiming the lives of two individuals and injuring 37.

This increase in terrorism has sparked renewed demands for stricter measures on immigration and extremism, a theme that has dominated the election campaign.
