Canada intends to counter Trump's tariffs, according to Bloomberg
The US President-elect has threatened to impose a 25% tax on all imported Canadian goods.

In response to these threats from US President-elect Donald Trump, Canada is reportedly contemplating significant tariffs on American products, as reported by Bloomberg on Friday, citing anonymous sources.

Trump has announced his intention to implement broad tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China immediately after taking office, aiming to pressure these countries into tackling illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He has specifically pledged to enact a 25% tax on all goods coming from Canada and Mexico, along with an additional 10% tariff on imports from China.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, Canadian officials are currently weighing their response to Trump’s proposals. While no final decisions have been reached, discussions are said to revolve around imposing tariffs on all US exports to Canada, striving for a “dollar for dollar” approach.

In addition, the Trudeau administration is reportedly exploring the possibility of implementing export taxes on key commodities such as oil, uranium, and potash.

As Canada is the largest supplier of crude oil to the United States and a significant global uranium producer, such measures could quickly impact US energy prices.

Furthermore, Trump recently indicated his willingness to utilize “economic force” to induce Canada to become the US's “51st state.” He even shared a social media post earlier this week featuring a map that depicted Canada as part of American territory.

Trump commented to reporters, “You get rid of that artificially-drawn line and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security."

Canadian officials have firmly dismissed the notion of annexation, with Trudeau stating on X that “there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.”
