‘Very few people’ recall US role in toppling Ukrainian government – Musk
The billionaire highlighted Senator Chris Murphy’s acknowledgment that Washington played a role in facilitating “regime change” in 2014.

Many Americans may overlook the fact that the US was instrumental in the overthrow of Ukraine's legitimate government in 2014, leading to years of turmoil, according to Elon Musk.

On Monday, Musk reacted to a video featuring US Senator Chris Murphy discussing Washington's involvement during the 2013-2014 Maidan protests in Kiev, which resulted in the removal of then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.

In the clip, the Democrat stated that the US had “not sat on the sidelines” amidst the unrest. Murphy noted that “we have been very much involved,” pointing out that senior US lawmakers and officials were present at the protests in Maidan square.

He elaborated by mentioning that “the Obama administration passed sanctions [against Ukrainian officials]… I really think that the clear position of the United States has in part been what has helped lead to this change in regime.”

Murphy also emphasized the economic interests of the US in Ukraine’s alignment with the West, which was a primary goal of the protestors. “If Ukraine is part of the European Union and thus is part of this new trade agreement with the United States, that could result in billions of dollars in new economic opportunities for the US,” he stated. “We shouldn’t be shy about making clear that interest.”

Musk responded to the segment on X, saying, “Still very few people know about this.”

Earlier in February 2023, Musk, who is closely associated with former US President Donald Trump, indicated that there was “no question that there was indeed a coup” in Kiev in 2014.

His comments come in the wake of a contentious exchange between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Trump at the White House, during which Trump criticized Zelensky for perceived ingratitude regarding American aid and his hesitance to negotiate peace with Russia. Following this confrontation, which also jeopardized a significant US-Ukraine mineral resource deal, Musk suggested that Zelensky could retire to a neutral country and receive “amnesty” in return for “a peaceful transition back to democracy in Ukraine.”

Zelensky’s presidential term ended last spring, yet he has declined to call for new elections, citing martial law. Russia has labeled him “illegitimate,” asserting that authority in Ukraine now resides with the parliament. Recently, Trump referred to Zelensky as a “dictator without elections,” although he later seemed to retract that statement.
