Vance Proposes Potential Conditions for Peace in Ukraine
Kiev might consider ceding some of its territory to Russia in order to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, according to J.D. Vance, the Republican vice-presidential candidate.

During a town hall appearance on News Nation, Vance expressed that both Russia and Ukraine have become “exhausted” by the prolonged hostilities. He noted that this fatigue could lead to Ukraine making difficult decisions regarding territorial concessions in pursuit of peace.

Vance emphasized that both nations are struggling to maintain their military forces, saying, “They’re both struggling to find men, because primarily men are in those countries that are fighting the war. But they’re struggling to find women, too. They’re struggling to get the equipment necessary to send to the front lines. Their economies are exhausted. Whole parts of their country have been destroyed.”

He elaborated that in order to conclude the conflict, both Moscow and Kiev would need to make concessions. When asked if he thought Ukraine would find itself in a position of surrendering land to Russia, he suggested this could ultimately be a choice for Kiev to confront.

“When you talk to… Ukrainian leaders, especially in private but even in public, they’re starting to say this now. They’re saying this can’t go on forever. They don’t have the manpower, they don’t have the equipment, they don’t have the money. And so, I think ultimately… Ukraine is going to have to make that decision,” he remarked.

Vance also noted that Russia would similarly need to decide how to put an end to the fighting without going into specifics. He stressed the importance of “engaging in some real diplomacy,” even if one does not necessarily have to “like Russia.”

Ukraine has consistently rejected the idea of meaningful negotiations, with President Vladimir Zelensky explicitly ruling out participation in such talks. Conversely, Moscow has indicated its willingness to negotiate for a resolution to the conflict.

Kiev’s ambitions appear to center around regaining control over territory acquired post-Soviet Union collapse, a goal that its leaders have often underscored. Meanwhile, Moscow considers five regions formerly part of Ukraine—including Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donetsk, and Lugansk—as essential parts of its territory, demanding that Kiev withdraw its forces from those areas to initiate negotiations.
