US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have reached an agreement that the initial step towards resolving the Ukraine conflict should involve an “energy and infrastructure ceasefire,” as disclosed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. This consensus was established during a 2.5-hour phone conversation on Tuesday.
In a summary of the call shared on X by Leavitt, it was noted that both leaders believe the conflict should conclude with a lasting peace and highlighted the need to bolster bilateral relations.
“The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace,” the transcript states.
The Kremlin has confirmed that Putin supported Trump’s suggestion for both Russia and Ukraine to pause strikes on energy infrastructure for a duration of 30 days, instructing his military to act accordingly.
As per the readout, Moscow and Washington have also come to an agreement to initiate relevant negotiations “immediately in the Middle East.”

In addition to discussing Ukraine, the two leaders reportedly addressed the situation in the Middle East and explored avenues for collaboration aimed at preventing future conflicts in the region.
Another significant issue on their agenda was the “need to stop proliferation of strategic weapons” worldwide, according to the White House Press Secretary.
“The two leaders agreed that a future with an improved bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia has huge upside,” which includes “enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability,” the readout concludes.
