US House Speaker Promises to Dismantle the 'Deep State'
US House Speaker Mike Johnson has announced an ambitious agenda focused on reforming taxes, borders, and regulations, with implementation targeted for 2025. In a recent appearance on Fox News, Johnson reiterated his commitment to dismantling what he calls the "deep state" as part of these widespread reforms, highlighting his intention to prioritize tax cuts, bolster border security, and reduce regulations.

Following his re-election as speaker of the House in November 2024, Johnson indicated that Republicans are prepared to swiftly pursue their goals in the new Congress. “We’ve made a lot of campaign promises. And we’re going to be dismantling the deep state all along the way,” he stated during the interview on Sunday Morning Futures.

At the heart of the Republican strategy is the prevention of what Johnson characterized as the “largest tax increase in US history,” set to take effect if the 2017 tax cuts are not renewed by the year's end. He aims to stimulate the economy by extending these tax cuts, eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits and tips, and raising the cap on state and local tax deductions. Additionally, the legislative agenda seeks to boost domestic manufacturing while reducing federal regulatory burdens.

“We are going to incentivize American companies to manufacture in the US again, and we are going to make sure that the regulatory burden and the red tape that has smothered our free market is reduced and eliminated,” Johnson noted during the Sunday broadcast.

To facilitate these reforms, Johnson intends to utilize budget reconciliation, a legislative process that allows bills to be passed in the Senate with a simple majority. He anticipates that the reform package will be enacted within the first 100 days of the forthcoming Republican administration.

The agenda further encompasses stringent immigration policies aimed at improving border security, with Johnson expressing support for completing the construction of the US-Mexico border wall and enhancing enforcement measures.

Johnson's re-election as speaker has been interpreted as a significant triumph for conservatives. He has committed to closely collaborating with President-elect Donald Trump, who has also pledged to dismantle the “deep state.” This term frequently refers to entrenched federal employees and bureaucracies that some conservatives believe hinder Republican initiatives.
