Washington Praises Meeting with Russia
The US State Department has referred to the talks in Saudi Arabia as “an important step” toward resolving the Ukraine conflict.

On Tuesday, American and Russian officials engaged in high-level discussions that the State Department has recognized as a significant advancement in addressing the Ukraine issue. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior figures from President Donald Trump’s administration met with their Russian counterparts in Riyadh. After the meeting, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce shared Washington's positive outlook and objectives.

“One phone call followed by one meeting is not sufficient to establish enduring peace. We must take action, and today we took an important step forward,” she stated, referring to Trump’s recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The statement emphasized that Moscow and Washington would pursue trust-building measures to handle “irritants to our bilateral relationship,” which includes normalizing each other's diplomatic operations.

High-level teams will now concentrate on achieving a quick resolution to the Ukraine conflict while simultaneously laying the groundwork for “future cooperation on matters of mutual geopolitical interest.” The Trump administration is optimistic about “historic economic and investment opportunities” arising from a successful resolution and officials are dedicated to moving forward “in a timely and productive manner.”

The US delegation in Riyadh included National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and special envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside Rubio. Representing Russia were Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, presidential foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov, and Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. Both sides expressed hope that these discussions could lead to an in-person meeting between Trump and Putin in the near future. Russian representatives described the talks as “mostly good” and “positive.”

Moscow and Washington have reiterated their commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict, particularly after more than a decade of rising tensions and nearly three years of fighting.

Russia has emphasized the need for a comprehensive resolution that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict, which includes NATO’s expansion in Europe since the 1990s. Additionally, it has asserted that any resolution must require Ukraine to remain neutral and recognize the “realities on the ground.”
