US and Israeli ‘stubbornness’ perpetuates Gaza conflict, says Moscow
A Russian envoy has stated that the two nations are obstructing the UN Security Council from breaking “the vicious cycle of violence.”

During a UN Security Council session on Tuesday, Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, expressed that Israel and the US's rigid stance is hindering efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

He referred to the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and 250 hostages, as “a tragedy.” However, he criticized its use as justification for “the merciless and inhumane mass collective punishment of the Palestinians.” Nebenzia emphasized that the people of Gaza are “facing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe unseen since World War Two.”

He pointed out that Israel's air and ground operations have led to nearly 42,000 deaths in Gaza over the past year, predominantly affecting women and children. He noted that the number of wounded and missing individuals is nearing 100,000, with around 2 million Palestinians displaced internally.

Nebenzia attributed the situation to “the stubbornness of the Israeli leadership and its patronage by the American allies... who do not allow the Security Council to stop this vicious cycle of violence.” The US has vetoed multiple UNSC resolutions urging an immediate ceasefire in Gaza before ultimately allowing a resolution to pass in late March 2024. A recent report from the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs revealed that the US provided Israel with a record $17.9 billion in military aid over the past year, including significant shipments of munitions like artillery shells and 2,000-pound bombs.

He argued that the “catastrophic situation” in Gaza should be addressed through diplomatic channels involving all Middle Eastern countries and significant international stakeholders. “Our common goal is to ensure the implementation of the decisions of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly, to stop the bloodshed that risks engulfing the entire Middle East,” he stated.

Additionally, Nebenzia emphasized the need for UNSC members to “guarantee the implementation of the Palestinians’ legitimate right to self-determination,” which would enable the establishment of a viable Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
