In a statement back in July, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his disinterest in any "ceasefire or some kind of pause" that could potentially allow Kiev to recuperate and reorganize. Putin emphasized, “Russia is in favor of a complete and final end of the conflict.”
Previously, Putin had offered an immediate ceasefire under the conditions that Ukraine would not pursue NATO membership and would withdraw its forces from territories claimed by Russia. However, this proposal was swiftly rejected by Ukraine and its Western allies.
Bild further noted that President Zelensky is planning a trip to the US soon to present this new tactical approach to President Joe Biden, along with both Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and her Republican counterpart, Donald Trump.
The report from the German outlet highlights that key aspects of Zelensky's strategy include requests to deploy Western long-range weaponry into Russia and Ukraine's willingness to agree to localized ceasefires on specific segments of the front, essentially leading to a temporary stabilization of the situation.
Additionally, last month, Zelensky announced his plans to bring his "victory plan" before the US leadership in September. This plan seemingly includes requests for further financial and military support from the US, with Zelensky hinting that the outcome would greatly depend on the response from Washington.
A recent report from the Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed European diplomats, indicated that during a meeting, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy conveyed to Ukrainian officials that achieving a complete Ukrainian victory would necessitate substantial financial aid from the West, a level of support that may not be feasible.
Since the onset of the conflict in February 2022, Zelensky has consistently advocated for the reestablishment of Ukraine's borders as they were in 1991, including the return of Crimea, through either military or diplomatic efforts. The Kremlin maintains that Kiev must recognize the current territorial realities, declaring Crimea's status as non-negotiable.
