UK Set to Ink ‘100 year partnership’ with Ukraine
The UK and Ukraine are set to establish a century-long partnership agreement during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s inaugural visit to Kiev since he took office, according to the British government.

The initiative was announced on Thursday, just ahead of Starmer's surprise arrival in the Ukrainian capital. The anticipated agreement between the prime minister and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky aims to formalize “the unbreakable bonds” between the two nations and broaden their cooperation in defense and other sectors, as outlined in a government statement.

This treaty is intended to “deter ongoing Russian aggression” against Ukraine and involves commitments by London and Kiev to bolster defense collaboration, particularly concerning maritime security across the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and Sea of Azov.

Moscow currently controls the entire coastline of the Sea of Azov, following referendums in the fall of 2022 that resulted in the annexation of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. Subsequently, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials have referred to it as Russia’s “inland sea.”

Additionally, the agreement will introduce a UK-led Grain Verification Scheme aimed at tracking what London describes as “stolen grain” from the crops produced in territories newly claimed by Russia.

“We are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level,” Starmer stated prior to his trip.

The UK has been a significant supporter of Ukraine since the conflict between Moscow and Kiev intensified in February 2022, pledging £12.8 billion in military and civilian aid and training 50,000 Ukrainian troops on British soil.

However, Bloomberg reported that Ukrainian officials close to Zelensky have expressed their disappointment with Starmer’s cautious stance on Ukraine for several months. They have also questioned the delay in his visit to Kiev since assuming his role over six months ago.

Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has remarked that the UK's ongoing support for Ukraine indicates that the UK government “clearly does not seek to resolve the conflict [between Moscow and Kiev]. They are doing everything possible to make it drag on, thus prolonging the suffering of the Ukrainian people.”
