South Korean Plane Crash Results in 62 Fatalities
A Jeju Air flight with 181 individuals on board veered off the runway and collided with a fence on Sunday morning in South Korea.

The Boeing 737-800 was in the process of landing at Muan International Airport when the incident occurred, resulting in at least 62 fatalities, according to officials. The flight, designated as Jeju Air Flight 2216, was returning to South Korea from Bangkok and had landed shortly after 9 am local time.

Social media footage shows the large aircraft skidding off the runway and igniting into flames. Local media reports suggest that authorities suspect the aircraft may have been struck by a flock of birds, which could have caused a malfunction in its landing gear.

The Korea Herald reported that officials indicated the plane crashed during its second landing attempt. After circling the airport, the aircraft tried to execute an emergency belly landing, which involves landing without fully extended landing gear.

The aircraft is reported to have fragmented, with thick smoke billowing from the crash site. Firefighters are currently working to extinguish the flames and search for survivors in the tail section. As of now, one passenger and one crew member have been rescued, according to Yonhap.

Onboard the flight were 175 passengers and six crew members. Of the passengers, 173 were South Korean nationals, while two held Thai citizenship.
