The Sunday Mail previously reported that Day, who is affiliated with the Labour party, had been texting the women to inquire about their sexual preferences, with attempts to set up dates and make compliments about their appearances.
While Labour is the third-largest party on the Edinburgh Council, Day has been at the helm of the local authority for over two years, with backing from the Liberal Democrats and Scottish Conservatives. Both parties are now calling for his resignation.
In an appearance on BBC Scotland’s Sunday Show, Sarwar referred to the allegations as “deeply distressing,” stating that the party acted “immediately” upon learning of the claims regarding inappropriate behavior. He also noted that police are investigating the matter, confirming that Day's suspension is pending the investigation's outcome.
According to multiple refugees cited by the Sunday Mail, the unwanted advances from the Labour politician were difficult to overlook due to his prominent position. One individual who fled Ukraine shortly after the military conflict escalated in 2022 recounted that the 50-year-old politician inundated her with messages upon her arrival in Edinburgh.
The messages reviewed by the tabloid reportedly show Day “asking sexually explicit questions, sending love heart and kissing emojis and repeatedly asking […] to meet up for wine.” Furthermore, it is alleged that he reached out to refugees through a dating app, where the messages were “more sexually explicit.”
“I tried to ignore all his hints about sex or meeting up because I was afraid of his influence and just tried to be polite to avoid any conflict,” an unnamed Ukrainian national shared, adding that her friends had experienced “a similar situation where he wrote to them on social media and in the dating app.”
“One of my Ukrainian friends said that this person had shown sexual interest for some time but I don’t know what actually happened or why he was interested specifically in Ukrainians,” she continued.
Another refugee, who has since left Edinburgh, corroborated that she received numerous messages from Day through social media and dating sites while residing in the city.
“He started following me then sent lots of emojis and reactions to posts and asked to meet up. It was too much and I didn’t know how to say I didn’t want him to contact me anymore because of his position,” she said.
A Labour spokesperson stated that the party is taking all complaints seriously and that they are being thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Police Scotland mentioned that “enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
