Premier Li Asserts: U.S. Tariffs Damage Global Trade and Economy
Chinese Premier Li Qiang stated on Friday that the U.S. so-called reciprocal tariffs "severely undermine the international economic and trade order" and greatly affect the global economy in a negative way.

During discussions with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing, Li highlighted that China’s macroeconomic policies for this year have taken into account various uncertainties, asserting that the country possesses sufficient policy tools and the confidence to maintain sustained and healthy economic development.
Li expressed China’s willingness to enhance communication and coordination with Spain and the European Union, collaboratively promote open cooperation, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, safeguard the multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization, and ensure the stability and smooth operation of global industrial and supply chains. He also emphasized the importance of upholding international fairness and justice, as well as the common interests of all parties, while expressing hope that Spain would play a positive role in fostering China-Europe cooperation.
Noting the steady progress in cooperation between China and Spain across various sectors in recent years, which has supported robust economic growth in both nations, Li remarked that this situation demonstrates that mutual respect, open collaboration, and mutual benefit are the correct approaches to international relations.
Li added that China is eager to work with Spain to uphold an open and pragmatic approach in light of the complex international situation, aiming to elevate comprehensive cooperation between the two nations to new heights.
He shared that China is inclined to strengthen the synergy of development strategies with Spain, fully leverage complementary industrial advantages, continuously explore trade and investment collaboration opportunities, and achieve higher levels of win-win outcomes.
Li indicated that China is open to importing more products from Spain and is committed to supporting deeper cooperation between enterprises in emerging sectors, such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, and new energy.
He also articulated China’s aim to expand collaboration in green development. Li noted that both sides should enhance comprehensive cooperation across fields such as culture, education, youth, science and technology, and tourism, thereby solidifying public support for friendly bilateral relations.
In response, Sanchez acknowledged that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain, expressing Spain's readiness to utilize this opportunity to further strengthen cooperation with China.
He reiterated that the Spanish government adheres to the one-China principle and is willing to elevate high-level exchanges with China, fostering political mutual trust, expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in the economy, trade, agriculture, and green economy, and enhancing cultural, educational, scientific, and technological exchanges.
Sanchez welcomed Chinese enterprises to invest and operate in Spain while advocating for the resolution of differences between Europe and China through dialogue and negotiation to advance Europe-China relations.
Referring to the U.S. additional tariffs, Sanchez stated that they are neither fair nor just and harm the EU's economy, emphasizing that the EU will bolster solidarity and cooperation to protect its own interests.
