During a visit from the Spanish royal family to the disaster-stricken region on Sunday, furious flood survivors expressed their anger by throwing mud and shouting insults at King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
Following torrential rains that hit the western Valencia area on Monday night, the death toll has exceeded 200. The royal couple, joined by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and regional president Carlos Mazon, visited Paiporta, one of the most severely impacted towns. Some residents hurled eggs and mud at the royals and officials, while others shouted “murderers,” “shame,” and “get out,” according to the Spanish news agency EFE. Videos captured the scene, showing security personnel attempting to shield the royals with umbrellas. Protesters also targeted the prime minister’s vehicle with stones.
Frustration ran high among locals, who criticized the government for their lack of early warning and slow response amid the devastation. “All we wanted was to be warned and we would have been saved,” one resident exclaimed to Reuters.
Despite the hostile atmosphere, the royal family attempted to engage with the residents, breaking through a police cordon. In a video shared on social media, Queen Letizia, visibly affected with mud on her face and hands, is seen embracing a woman in an effort to console her.
Approximately thirty minutes into their visit, the royals were escorted away by police, forcing a postponement of their planned trip to another affected town, Chiva.
Later in the day, King Felipe addressed the public in a video statement, expressing his understanding of “the anger and frustration,” and urging for support to provide “hope and their guarantee that the state in its entirety is present” for the victims.
