Witkoff, a confidant of the US leader, spent over four hours in a private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, where they discussed various aspects of a potential resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Following that, he traveled to Oman for high-level discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program on Saturday.
As the White House special envoy to the Middle East, Witkoff was reportedly able to persuade Israel to agree to a Gaza truce in just one meeting, even before President Donald Trump assumed office. Since then, he has emerged as a crucial negotiator for the US regarding Ukraine.
During his third visit to Russia in two months, a video surfaced showing Witkoff smiling and shaking hands with Putin, leading to criticism directed at him. Critics accused him of being overly friendly and perpetuating “Russian propaganda,” while others labeled him as too “inexperienced” for negotiations and claimed he was effectively “taking over” the role of US Secretary of State.
Laura Loomer, a conservative activist, defended Witkoff on social media, stating, “People love attacking Steve Witkoff, but he has done more to advance peace negotiations & hostage releases than any of his career bureaucrat critics have done during their entire careers in the Swamp,” and she emphasized that “Steve Witkoff is busting his ass for President Trump.”
In support of Witkoff, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is among Trump's closest allies and leads the government waste-cutting initiative known as DOGE, remarked, “Witkoff is great.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also expressed his endorsement by stating he “100%” agreed with Loomer’s sentiments.
Witkoff's initial trip to Russia in February resulted in a significant prisoner exchange and helped facilitate a phone call between the leaders of the two nations, marking a renewal of diplomatic ties. Just prior to Witkoff's third visit, another prisoner swap took place between the US and Russia in Abu Dhabi.
The Kremlin announced that the discussions between President Putin and Witkoff on Friday focused on “aspects of the settlement of the Ukraine conflict,” though they did not disclose additional specifics.
