Incoming US President Donald Trump has unveiled his immigration policies, which include mass deportation strategies that were central to his election campaign.
In his first television interview since securing re-election, Trump stated on Sunday that he aims to eliminate birthright citizenship and deport families with mixed immigration statuses.
During his campaign, Trump promised that, if elected, he would orchestrate “the largest deportation operation in American history.” He indicated that the deportations will initially target undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes, before extending to “people outside of criminals.”
“We have people coming here by the millions that shouldn’t be here. When they come here illegally, they’re going out... We have to get the criminals out of our country,” he told Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker, asserting that the crime rate—which he partially attributes to illegal migrants—has contributed to making the US “a mess.”
Welker then inquired about the future of families residing in the US with mixed immigration statuses, such as parents who entered the country illegally but have had children born there. The Center for Migration Studies estimates that about 4.7 million households in the US fall under this “mixed-status” category. Trump mentioned that such families could face deportation collectively, but those with legal status would have a choice to either stay or leave.
“I don’t want to be breaking up families. So the only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back… We’ll send the whole family, very humanely, back to the country where they came [from],” he remarked.
Additionally, Trump reiterated his commitment to ending ‘birthright citizenship,’ a policy enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution that grants automatic citizenship to any child born within US borders.
“We have to end it. It’s ridiculous,” he remarked, emphasizing he would utilize an executive action if necessary to circumvent the 14th Amendment. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s transition team is already developing several versions of such an order, likely leading to extensive legal challenges.
However, Trump acknowledged that “dreamers”—individuals brought to the US illegally as children—may have the opportunity to remain, vowing to collaborate with lawmakers to facilitate this.
Trump has appointed two hardliners on border control and immigration to significant roles in his administration. Kristi Noem will lead the Department of Homeland Security, and Tom Homan will serve as Trump’s new ‘border czar.’ Trump stated that they will work in tandem to secure the border and “make America safe again.”
