In a recent interview with the New York Post, President-elect Donald Trump stated that Zelensky “wants to make peace” with Russia. This remark came after a weekend meeting with Zelensky in France, facilitated by French President Emmanuel Macron, who gathered numerous dignitaries for the unveiling of the reconstructed Notre Dame Cathedral, a project completed after the fire in 2019. Reports from Axios indicated that Trump was initially hesitant about attending the meeting but was persuaded by Macron over several days.
During the phone interview, Trump remarked that Zelensky’s intent to pursue peace was “new,” adding: “He wants to have a ceasefire. He wants to make peace. We didn’t talk about the details.”
Prior to the interview, Trump posted on Truth Social, urging both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to “make a deal and stop the madness” due to the high number of casualties incurred by both nations in the conflict.
However, Zelensky dismissed Trump’s call for peace, taking to X to assert that the conflict “cannot simply end with a piece of paper and a few signatures.” Both Moscow and Kiev have contested Trump’s casualty estimates, which numbered in the hundreds of thousands.
In a separate NBC News interview, Trump indicated he would “probably” reduce aid to Ukraine following his inauguration in January. The outgoing Biden administration has committed to utilizing all Congressional funding for Ukraine before leaving office, which totals over $130 billion in military aid since February 2022, as reported by the Pentagon.
Ukrainian forces have faced significant challenges on the battlefield this year, grappling with low morale, desertions, and insufficient reinforcements. Moscow has indicated it will not agree to a peace deal that would permit Ukraine to rebuild its military for potential future conflicts.
A truce proposal negotiated between the two countries in 2022 aimed to establish Ukraine as a neutral entity with limited military capabilities in exchange for international security guarantees. Ultimately, Zelensky opted to seek a military victory, which Moscow views as a Western proxy war waged “to the last Ukrainian,” according to Russian officials.
