Trump Prepares to Restructure US Emergency Agency
The US president has called for addressing concerns over FEMA's disaster response and alleged political bias.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to establish a review council aimed at evaluating the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Co-chaired by the secretaries of Homeland Security and Defense, the council will assess the effectiveness of FEMA and recommend necessary improvements.

In the order released on Friday, Trump pointed out concerns regarding FEMA's response to recent disasters, stating: “Despite obligating nearly $30 billion in disaster aid each of the past three years, FEMA has managed to leave vulnerable Americans without the resources or support they need when they need it most.”

The president also raised issues of political bias within the agency, referencing an incident where a FEMA supervisor was dismissed for instructing relief workers to avoid homes displaying pro-Trump signs after Hurricane Milton in Florida.

Acting FEMA head Cam Hamilton responded to the executive order by reassuring agency staff about their vital role in national security and disaster response. He emphasized the importance of FEMA’s mission and the commitment of its employees.

The newly established council is expected to convene its first public meeting within 90 days and deliver a report containing recommendations within 180 days of that meeting.

Since its inception in 1979, FEMA has been responsible for coordinating the federal response to natural and man-made disasters. Over the years, the agency has faced criticism for its handling of various emergencies, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Maria in 2017.

In recent months, Trump has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with FEMA’s performance.

Commenting on the severe wildfires that erupted this month in Southern California, the Republican stated on Truth Social: “No water in the fire hydrants, no money in FEMA. This is what [former President] Joe Biden is leaving me. Thanks, Joe!”

During a visit to North Carolina following Hurricane Helene, he suggested that the agency might undergo significant changes or even be eliminated, stating, “I think, frankly, FEMA is not good.”
