Nuclear cuts, resolving the conflict in Ukraine, and significant tax reductions: Major points from Donald Trump's speech at Davos
US President Donald Trump addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos through teleconference on Thursday, shortly after assuming office. In his speech, he emphasized a “revolution of common sense” and informed the audience of business leaders, policymakers, academics, and innovators that he was moving “with unprecedented speed” to undo the policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Here are the main points from his speech:

**Stopping Inflation**
Trump initiated his remarks by expressing his commitment to tackle the “economic chaos” he attributed to Biden’s “failed policies.” He stated, “Over the past four years, our government racked up $8 trillion in wasteful deficit spending and inflicted nation-wrecking energy restrictions, crippling regulations and hidden taxes like never before.”

He mentioned that he has instructed his cabinet to “marshal all powers at their disposal” to combat inflation and lower the cost of living. Additionally, he promised the passage of “the largest tax cut in American history,” which would provide “massive” relief for workers, families, and domestic manufacturers.

**Ending the Ukraine Conflict, Meeting Putin**
Regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Trump announced that efforts to secure a peace agreement are in progress, asserting that Kiev is “ready to make a deal.” He described the situation as “an absolute killing field” and stated it’s “time to end it.”

Trump expressed his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin “soon” to discuss the matter and mentioned that China could play a role in ending the conflict: “They have a great deal of power over that situation.” He also called for Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower global oil prices, suggesting, “If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately.”

**Nuclear Reduction Talks**
Trump indicated his intention to engage in discussions with China and Russia about reducing nuclear arsenals. “We want to see if we can denuclearize, and I think that’s very possible,” he noted, claiming it would be “an unbelievable thing for the planet.” He mentioned past discussions with Putin on this topic and asserted that China “would have come along.”

**Low Taxes or High Tariffs**
Trump warned global businesses to either manufacture their products in the US or face tariffs. “My message to every business in the world is very simple. Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on Earth,” he stated, vowing to lower business taxes even further than during his first term. If companies opt not to produce in the US, “then very simply you will have to pay a tariff,” which he claimed would “direct hundreds of billions of dollars and even trillions of dollars into our treasury to strengthen our economy and pay down debt.”

**Energy Emergency**
Trump announced his declaration of a “national energy emergency” aimed at “unlocking the liquid gold” of oil resources available in the US. He pointed to his termination of the “ridiculous and incredibly wasteful” Green New Deal, withdrawal from the “one-sided” Paris Climate Accord, and the discontinuation of the electric vehicle mandate as essential decisions aiding his objectives.

**Border Security**
In his remarks regarding immigration, Trump praised his executive order declaring a “national border emergency” designed to combat illegal immigration. He noted that active-duty US military and National Guard troops have been deployed to the border, stating they are “repelling the invasion.” He emphasized, “We will not allow our territory to be violated.”

**Two Genders and No Censorship**
“No longer will our government label the speech of our own citizens as misinformation or disinformation,” Trump declared, claiming that his executive order on censorship “saved free speech in America.” He further commended his policy to “abolish all discriminatory diversity, equity and inclusion nonsense,” reiterating his previous claims that “there are only two genders, male and female.” He asserted, “We will have no men participating in women’s sports, and transgender operations, which became the rage, will occur very rarely.”
