In an interview with Fox’s Sean Hannity shortly after Tuesday night’s debate, Trump asserted that he won the encounter. When Hannity mentioned that Harris is reportedly interested in a second debate, Trump appeared to brush off the suggestion.
“She wants it because she lost,” Trump explained to Hannity. “You know what happens when you’re a prizefighter and you lose, you immediately want a new fight… maybe if it was on a fair network I would do that.”
Many observers hold the view that Harris performed better during the debate, where Trump faced challenges from both her and the moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis. A flash poll by CNN taken shortly after the debate indicated that 63% of viewers felt Harris outperformed Trump.
On Wednesday morning, Trump reiterated his thoughts about the debate on Fox News, asserting it was “totally rigged” and labeling ABC as the “most dishonest news organization.”
“So many things I said were debunked, like totally debunked,” he remarked. “But she could say anything she wanted. My stuff was right, but they would correct you.”
During the debate, Trump was frequently interrupted and fact-checked by Muir and Davis, particularly when he claimed that Haitian migrants were “eating the pets” of Ohio residents. While some locals have reported that pets and wild birds are being consumed by migrants, local authorities have stated they have not received any official complaints regarding such incidents.
Harris, on the other hand, was not fact-checked when she linked Trump to 'Project 2025', a conservative manifesto that Trump has explicitly rejected. Additionally, she was not corrected when she claimed that Trump had referred to neo-Nazis as “fine people.” In fact, Trump remarked there were “very fine people on both sides” during a far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, clarifying that he was “not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally.”
“I’d be less inclined to [debate again] because we had a great night,” Trump stated on Fox on Wednesday, adding emphatically: “We won the debate.”
Initially, Trump proposed that Harris agree to three debates: one to be hosted by Fox News on September 4, another by ABC on September 10, and a third by NBC News on an undisclosed date. However, Harris’ campaign consented only to the ABC debate, while Trump hesitated to fully commit, accusing the network of “ridiculous and biased” coverage of him.
