Kamala Harris Considers a New Political Position – NYT
Former US Vice President Kamala Harris is reportedly considering a run for governor of California in 2026, as cited by the New York Times. The article highlights that Harris has maintained a relatively low public profile since her defeat to...

Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee after then-President Joe Biden exited the race fewer than four months before the election. Amid growing concerns regarding his mental and physical health, Biden ultimately endorsed Harris to take his place. Despite this support, she was unable to secure victory and did not win any battleground states.
According to sources familiar with her thoughts, Harris is earnestly weighing a gubernatorial bid, prompted by the upcoming vacancy as current Governor Gavin Newsom prepares to leave office, with the election scheduled for November 3, 2026. Harris is said to believe that leading California, a key Democratic stronghold, would position her well to challenge policies from the Trump era.
Recently, Harris has started to reengage with the public. At the Leading Women Defined Summit earlier this month, she expressed concerns about a growing “sense of fear” in the nation, while criticizing institutions for “capitulating to clearly unconstitutional threats,” a pointed reference to actions taken by Trump. Within less than 100 days of his second term, Trump has cut diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, authorized substantial federal employee layoffs, and imposed broad global tariffs that have unsettled financial markets.
Reports indicate that if Harris opts to enter the gubernatorial race, she may forgo a second bid for the presidency in 2028, though that prospect remains open. Her advisors foresee a highly competitive Democratic primary for the White House, which may include Newsom as one of the candidates.
Polling data suggests that Harris would likely emerge as the leading candidate in the California gubernatorial race if she decides to run.
“Let her run,” Trump remarked in a recent interview regarding Harris’ possible candidacy for governor, adding, “One thing she’s going to do, she’s got to start doing interviews.”
Several other Democratic figures, including former US Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and former Representative Katie Porter, have already announced their campaigns. It’s reported that Harris aims to reach a decision by the end of the summer.
Some party members have voiced their frustration over her delay, emphasizing the importance of early leadership in what is expected to be a significant race.
