French Prime Minister Accuses US of Betraying Democratic World
French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has criticized the United States for abandoning the democratic world, contending that Washington’s abrupt shift toward closer ties with Russia has eroded trust among its allies and destabilized the global...

In remarks made on Tuesday, Bayrou stated that the US, once viewed as the cornerstone of the Organization of Free Nations and a protector of international law, has forsaken fundamental Western values. He expressed that it was “shocking” for a nation traditionally recognized as a pillar of the global framework to “could suddenly side with the aggressor.”
Since US President Donald Trump took office in January, Moscow and Washington have been involved in negotiations, with multiple high-level discussions focused on pursuing a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict and improving bilateral relations.
Concerns have been voiced by certain EU members and Ukrainian officials regarding what they see as Washington's alignment with Russia regarding the Ukraine crisis. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has claimed this week that “Russian narratives are prevailing” within the Trump administration, a statement that the White House has dismissed as “absurd.”
Bayrou pointed to the pressure on Ukraine “to surrender immediately to the demands of his aggressor under the threat of being cut off from all military aid” as indicative of a significant shift in US policy.
The French Prime Minister also remarked on a public confrontation between Trump and Zelensky in February at the White House, where Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of disrespect and ingratitude towards past US assistance, suggesting that Zelensky was hesitant to pursue peace with Russia and was “gambling with World War III.”
Additionally, Trump later alleged that Zelensky was trying to negotiate a long-term aid arrangement while temporarily suspending military support to Kiev.
In his address, Bayrou criticized Trump for dismantling decades of cooperation by initiating a global trade war “without warning,” imposing sweeping tariffs that affected both adversaries and allies. He characterized the fallout as a “cyclone” that has weakened international law and economic stability.
Bayrou concluded by emphasizing the urgent need for the French government to address its budget deficit in order to brace for a “tsunami of destabilization” triggered by Trump’s tariffs.
