Survey Reveals Most Russians Consider Themselves 'Happy'
A recent nationwide poll has revealed that happiness levels among Russians have remained “surprisingly resilient” despite facing various external challenges.

According to the poll released on Wednesday by the state pollster VCIOM, nearly 80% of Russians report feeling happy. The survey indicates that the overall wellbeing of the population has held strong, even as the percentage of individuals self-identifying as absolutely or moderately happy varies month to month.

In the latest survey, conducted last month with approximately 1,600 participants aged 18 and older, VCIOM posed the question: “There are good and bad things in life, but overall, would you say you are happy?”

The findings showed that 79% of respondents considered themselves “happy in one way or another,” with over a third expressing that they were “absolutely happy.”

“As recent years have shown, happiness levels in Russia have remained surprisingly resilient in the face of external shocks,” the pollster noted.

VCIOM pointed to the Covid-19 pandemic as an example, asserting that it did not cause widespread despondency, which they believe reflects “the psychological resilience of the population.”

In the latest World Happiness Report, Russia ranked 66th out of the 147 countries surveyed last year, with Finland being the happiest and Afghanistan the least happy.

Among European countries, Ukraine was noted as the unhappiest, coming in at 111th globally.

The World Happiness Report is published annually and assesses global contentment through various metrics, including life evaluations, social support, freedom of choice, GDP per capita, and other wellbeing indicators. The data is sourced from the Gallup World Poll and various additional resources.
