OpenAI Prepares to Challenge Musk's X, According to Reports
A prototype developed by OpenAI, the San Francisco-based company known for ChatGPT, is said to showcase an AI image feed and may pose competition to social media platforms like Elon Musk’s X. According to The Verge, sources close to the project...

CEO Sam Altman is actively gathering private feedback from individuals outside the company, as reported by the outlet. However, it remains uncertain whether OpenAI plans to launch the project as an independent app or integrate it into ChatGPT, which recently achieved 46 million new downloads, making it the most downloaded app globally last month, according to Appfigures.
The possible development of a social media network by OpenAI “would likely increase Altman’s already-bitter rivalry with Elon Musk,” as noted by The Verge. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, departed from the company in 2018. This February, Musk proposed $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI, but Altman declined, reportedly responding, “no thank you but we will buy twitter [now known as X] for $9.74 billion if you want,” according to The Verge.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, may also be a target for OpenAI. The report highlighted that Meta is preparing to introduce its own AI assistant app featuring a social media feed. In response to reports of Meta developing a ChatGPT competitor, Altman remarked on X in February: “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.” Having a social media platform could reportedly enable OpenAI to gather unique real-time user data to enhance its AI models, much like how Meta and Musk’s xAI operate, as per The Verge.
Musk has integrated his AI venture xAI with X, where Grok, a chatbot created by xAI, is incorporated. Grok utilizes content from the platform to inform its responses. A source from another AI lab mentioned to The Verge, “The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous,” particularly regarding its effectiveness in aiding users to create viral content.
It remains unclear whether OpenAI’s social media prototype will be launched to the public.
