Trump mandates formation of 'Iron Dome' missile defense shield
The newly inaugurated US president is committed to establishing a “next-generation missile defense shield” aimed at safeguarding the nation against long-range attacks.

US President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to formulate a strategy for a new integrated missile defense system, asserting that a potential sophisticated long-range aerial assault represents the “most catastrophic threat” facing the country. This proposed missile defense initiative is inspired by the Israeli Iron Dome system, which is the backbone of Israel’s multi-layer air-defense framework.

On his first day in office, the president issued an executive order entitled ‘The Iron Dome for America,’ assigning the task of developing this system to the Defense Secretary.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has been given a 60-day deadline to devise a plan that will shield the US from “ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other next-generation aerial attacks from peer, near-peer, and rogue adversaries” while outlining the new multi-layered missile defense system.

“Over the past 40 years, rather than lessening, the threat from next-generation strategic weapons has become more intense and complex with the development by peer and near-peer adversaries of next-generation delivery systems and their own homeland integrated air and missile defense capabilities,” states the executive order.

The directive outlines several components for the proposed missile shield, including the “development and deployment of proliferated space-based interceptors” that can eliminate incoming ballistic missiles during their boost phase, enhancement of the “underlayer and terminal-phase intercept capabilities,” and unspecified “capabilities to defeat missile attacks prior to launch.”

While the order suggests that these plans should be reflected in the upcoming budget, no specific cost estimates have been provided for this ambitious undertaking, nor is there a timeline for the missile shield’s implementation.

Trump has consistently expressed his intention to build an integrated missile defense shield similar to Israel’s, although the practicalities of applying such a model in the much larger US context remain uncertain.

“I will direct our military to begin construction of the great Iron Dome missile defense shield, which will be made all in the USA, much of it right here in Arizona,” Trump stated during a rally last month.

The Iron Dome system of Israel is mainly designed to intercept small, crude unguided rockets, drones, and artillery shells, while other systems address more advanced threats, including sophisticated long-range ballistic and cruise missiles.
