Trump indicates a 'probable' meeting with Putin in Saudi Arabia
The two leaders engaged in a lengthy and “highly productive” phone conversation on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump has identified Saudi Arabia as a potential location for his first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his second term. Moscow has yet to comment on Trump's remarks.

The announcement came just hours after the two leaders discussed the Ukraine conflict and other issues during their phone call.

“The first time we’ll meet in Saudi Arabia, see if we get something done,” Trump stated to reporters in the Oval Office.

He suggested that multiple meetings with Putin might occur in the upcoming months, asserting, “We expect that he’ll come here, and I’ll go there, and we’re going to meet also, probably in Saudi Arabia.”

While Trump did not specify dates for what he referred to as “the first meeting” with Putin, he mentioned that it would be held in the “not so distant future.” He also remarked that both leaders were familiar with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and that the kingdom could serve as “a very good place to meet.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed the press that Putin had invited Trump to visit Moscow during their phone conversation; however, no timeframe for a potential meeting was provided. Trump confirmed that the two leaders had agreed to “work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s nations.”

According to a report by Reuters in early February, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had been considered by Moscow as possible locations for a summit between the leaders, based on insights from two Russian sources. The report added that Russian officials had visited both countries the previous month.

At that time, the Kremlin, Riyadh, and Abu Dhabi did not comment on the information. On Wednesday, Reuters also reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, were reportedly involved in discussions that resulted in this week’s release of US national Marc Fogel, who had been imprisoned in Russia on drug smuggling charges. In exchange, Washington was said to have agreed to release Russian crypto businessman and computer programmer Aleksandr Vinnik from US custody.
