Trump criticizes Harris and Biden's 'rhetoric' following recent alleged assassination attempt
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Trump declared, “I am the one who is going to save the country,” on Monday.
“Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country, and they are the ones that are destroying the country — both from the inside and out,” Trump claimed, though he did not provide specific proof.
Both Harris and Biden issued statements repudiating political violence on Sunday.
“We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence,” Harris noted in her statement, expressing that she was “deeply disturbed” by the threat against Trump’s life.
Biden expressed his relief that Trump was safe and mentioned he has “directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former president’s continued safety.” On Monday, he advocated for additional funding for the Secret Service.
Ryan Wesley Routh, identified as the alleged shooter, faced charges on Monday for firearms violations related to the incident at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. A Secret Service agent reportedly saw Routh aiming an AK-47-style rifle through a fence at the golf course, but managed to detain him before any shots were fired.
As of Monday afternoon, Routh’s motives were still unknown.
Trump told Fox News Digital that Biden and Harris are to blame for Routh’s actions because of the “combination of rhetoric and lawsuits they wrap me up in. These are the things that dangerous fools, like the shooter, listen to — that is the rhetoric they listen to, and the same with the first [assassination attempt]."
No immediate responses were given by the Harris campaign or the White House to inquiries about Trump’s comments from the interview on Monday.
The FBI is treating the incident as a potential assassination effort, according to a statement released Sunday. Additionally, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state will also conduct an investigation.
Trump also criticized last week’s presidential debate with Harris on ABC News during the interview, labeling it “so biased and so out of control” and described it as “three against one” due to the presence of the vice president and two moderators.
He reiterated his critique of Harris and Biden in a social media update on Monday. Trump wrote, “The Rhetoric, Lies, as exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC Debate, and all of the ridiculous lawsuits specifically designed to inflict damage on Joe’s, then Kamala’s, Political Opponent, ME, has taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust. Because of this Communist Left Rhetoric, the bullets are flying, and it will only get worse!”
Supporting Trump's views, Rep. Mike Waltz remarked during a Fox News interview on Sunday that the narrative promoted by Democrats could lead to violent actions.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, reflecting on the successful prevention of the attack, referred to it as a divine intervention.
“It is something that no one can deny: God has spared his life twice now,” Johnson remarked on Fox News on Monday, “These things aren’t accidents, it’s not luck. I believe it’s providence and we talked about that. It’s a remarkable thing, it would move any man’s heart. I believe he’s processing that right now.”
