US President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his campaign commitment to prioritize the expansion of oil and gas output when he assumes office in January.
Trump has demonstrated his staunch support for the oil and gas sector by promising to facilitate access to drilling leases for energy companies and develop additional energy infrastructure. Expected policies may include allowing energy firms to export more natural gas and increasing drilling on federal lands.
In an interview with NBC News, the president-elect reiterated his promise to boost oil production. When asked if he would instruct US authorities to take action against those he believes overstepped in their investigations of him in recent years, Trump replied, “No, not at all. I think that they’ll have to look at that, but I’m not going to – I’m going to focus on drill, baby, drill.”
The phrase originated from a Republican campaign slogan first used in 2008 and was frequently repeated by Trump during his recent campaign. He has been critical of President Joe Biden's administration regarding energy prices, stating at a rally in Las Vegas in June: “We’re going to drill, baby, drill. We’re going to bring down your energy costs.”
Last month, Trump announced his intention to nominate North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as his secretary of the interior. Burgum has a history of opening millions of acres of public land to fracking. The position is expected to concentrate on streamlining policies related to oil, gas, and coal production to enhance supply rather than restrict demand.
As the world’s leading oil producer, the US is projected to further increase its oil output to 13.5 million barrels per day next year, up from 12.9 million and 13.2 million in 2023 and 2024, respectively, according to the Energy Information Administration.
