Xi plans Russia visit, to participate in celebrations of the Great Patriotic War Victory
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for a state visit to Russia from May 7 to 10, during which he will participate in the festivities commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War in Moscow. This visit comes at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, according to a spokesperson from the foreign ministry announced on Sunday.

The spokesperson highlighted that President Xi and President Putin have historically played pivotal roles in steering China-Russia relations into a new era, maintaining progress despite a challenging international backdrop. They have focused on the enduring qualities of their relationship, characterized by perpetual good-neighborliness, friendship, comprehensive strategic coordination, and mutual benefits.
During the forthcoming visit, President Xi is expected to engage in strategic talks with President Putin regarding China-Russia relations in the context of new global circumstances, as well as address a range of significant international and regional matters.
"We believe the important common understandings between the two presidents will further deepen political mutual trust between the two countries, add new substance to strategic coordination, promote practical cooperation in various fields, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and contribute more stability and positive energy to the international community," the spokesperson stated.
This year is significant as it marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Great Patriotic War, and the World Anti-Fascist War. The spokesperson pointed out that as pivotal theaters in World War II, both China and Russia made substantial sacrifices and historic contributions to secure victory and safeguard their nations and humanity's future.
The two leaders had previously agreed on the importance of jointly commemorating their shared history, honoring fallen heroes, fostering a correct understanding of World War II, defending the wartime victories' outcomes, preserving the post-war international order, and promoting fairness and justice on the global stage.
Amidst this significant historical context, the spokesperson described President Xi’s attendance at the celebrations in Moscow as a vital component of his visit, emphasizing it reflects the mutual support between China and Russia for each other’s commemorations of their respective victories.
Additionally, this year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The spokesperson remarked that as founding and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia bear a particular responsibility in upholding the international system centered around the UN.
"The two countries will further strengthen their close coordination in the UN, SCO, BRICS and other multilateral platforms, rally the Global South, shape global governance in the right direction, unequivocally oppose acts of unilateralism and bullying, and jointly promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization," the spokesperson concluded.
