Trump Claims LA Fires Are "worse than nuclear strike"
The US president-elect has voiced his criticisms regarding the crisis management in California, raising concerns about the escalating death toll.

US President-elect Donald Trump characterized the damage from the Los Angeles wildfires as comparable to a nuclear attack, cautioning that the number of casualties could increase in the days ahead. He took aim at California’s leadership, especially Governor Gavin Newsom, implying that poor management has worsened the situation.

The wildfires, which ignited last week in southern California, have taken the lives of at least 24 people, scorched over 40,000 acres, and obliterated more than 12,000 structures, leaving entire neighborhoods in ruins.

Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed 16 fatalities from the Eaton fire and eight from the Palisades fire, with 16 individuals reported missing. Authorities anticipate that the death toll could rise as search teams equipped with cadaver-sniffing dogs continue to sift through the debris.

In a Newsmax interview, Trump foresaw that rescuers would uncover “many more dead” and expressed his astonishment at the extent of the devastation.

“I believe it’s greater damage than if they got hit by a nuclear weapon. I’ve never seen anything like it. Vast miles and miles of houses just burned to a crisp. There’s nothing standing,” Trump remarked during the discussion.

He mentioned having seen “very guarded pictures” of the wreckage, asserting that the disaster is “far worse than you even see on television, if that’s believable.”

The president-elect shifted the blame to California’s leadership for the tragedy's magnitude, stating that it might have been averted had water been allowed to flow from Canada into the state and if forest management had been adequate. Trump specifically accused Governor Newsom of prioritizing environmental concerns over saving lives and called for Newsom's resignation.

Trump is reportedly contemplating a personal visit to southern California to assess the damage, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, which cited insiders familiar with his intentions. During his Newsmax interview, he also showed an interest in participating in the area’s rebuilding efforts, declaring that “we’re gonna do things with Los Angeles. You know, I’m already putting my developer cap on.”

In response, Newsom has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions and is seeking additional federal assistance to address the fires.

Outgoing President Joe Biden has sanctioned a Major Disaster Declaration, which allows for federal resources to be mobilized for response and recovery initiatives.

The latest estimates from AccuWeather suggest that the wildfires have inflicted economic losses ranging from $250 billion to $275 billion, encompassing property damage, firefighting costs, and disruptions to the economy.
