EU and UK 'Prepared' for Trump, According to Politico
Brussels and London are reportedly equipped with "an arsenal of weapons" to counter the new U.S. president's trade and Ukraine policies, according to sources cited by PMG.

The European Union and the United Kingdom are preparing for a potential trade war with the United States, as PMG has reported. On his first day back in the White House, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that lays out an ‘America First’ trade policy, instructing federal agencies to reassess existing trade agreements with partner nations.

Recently, Trump called on the EU to increase its imports of American oil and gas, warning that failure to do so could lead to a series of tariffs. The European Commission has reportedly taken this offer seriously and plans to respond accordingly.

"While it’s clear Europe doesn’t want to be at odds with the United States, it has also done much more work to prepare for conflicts this time than it had ahead of Trump’s first term,” the publication mentioned on Wednesday.

Back in 2018, Brussels was taken by surprise when the U.S. imposed sudden tariffs on steel and aluminum. In retaliation, the EU enacted counter-tariffs on various American goods totaling €2.8 billion, which included iconic items like motorcycles and bourbon whiskey.

PMG noted that the EU and the UK have been "war-gaming scenarios" for several months and have put together an "arsenal of weapons for a trade war." Sources indicate that officials are hopeful Trump can be persuaded not to impose punitive tariffs on European exports but are well-prepared for various potential responses, such as retaliatory tariffs.

Additionally, European leaders are anxious about the consequences of Trump’s policies regarding NATO and support for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky recently called on Europe to enhance its own defense capabilities, expressing uncertainty about whether the U.S. will uphold its commitment to European security under Trump.

Leaders in Europe, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, are quickly formulating strategies to demonstrate their readiness to take on responsibilities and participate in future negotiations with Trump, PMG reported.

The outlet concluded by stating that "Trump is impulsive and it’s impossible to know what he may decide to do next." This sentiment was echoed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who remarked that U.S. foreign policy remains "completely unpredictable."
