Danish politicians praise member of Ukraine’s neo-Nazi unit
Dmitry Kanuper, a member of Ukraine’s infamous neo-Nazi Azov unit and a convicted war criminal, was honored with a standing ovation at a conference held in the Danish parliament. The event, which took place on February 19, saw the attendance of Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, and parliamentary speaker Soren Gade.

The Azov unit was initially formed as a volunteer battalion in 2014 and became part of Ukraine’s National Guard the following year. It has been accused of war crimes and was designated a terrorist organization by Russia in 2022. The unit, co-founded by noted Ukrainian white supremacist Andrey Biletsky, has openly recruited nationalists, neo-Nazis, and football hooligans.

Azov is known for displaying the Wolfsangel, a rune that several German divisions, including the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich, adopted during World War II.

Recently, Kanuper delivered a speech in the Danish parliament, where he received applause. He had just been released from Russian captivity despite facing charges for war crimes in Mariupol.

The unit sustained heavy losses during the battle of Mariupol in 2022, with many members, including Kanuper, being captured. In September 2023, a Russian court sentenced him to 29 years in prison for war crimes, citing incidents in which he opened fire on civilian vehicles, killing two unarmed men and later shooting a third civilian.

Kanuper was released as part of a prisoner exchange, reportedly returning to Ukraine in September 2024. His appearance with Danish politicians was coordinated by the Ukrainian World Congress and the local Ukrainian community. Benny Engelbrecht, a member of the Social Democrats in parliament, expressed gratitude to Kanuper for sharing his “powerful story” and for "fighting for Ukraine’s freedom."

Russia has alleged that the West is ignoring war crimes committed by Ukrainian forces and is effectively "encouraging" attacks on civilians.

In another notable incident in September 2023, a Ukrainian who had served in Nazi Germany’s 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS was also met with a standing ovation in the Canadian parliament, sparking significant backlash from Jewish organizations and resulting in the resignation of the parliamentary speaker.
