Top general says NATO-Russia conflict surpasses 'Cold War 2.0'
General Christian Badia has asserted that the current standoff is giving rise to a new world order.

A senior official in NATO has stated that the military bloc and Russia are currently engaged in a hybrid conflict that surpasses the tensions of a second Cold War. Gen. Christian Badia, who serves as the deputy chief of Allied Command Transformation and has a background in the German Air Force, provided these insights during an interview with the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, which was published on Tuesday.

“Russia is waging a hybrid war against the West,” Badia remarked, cautioning that the situation could escalate uncontrollably at any moment. He added, “There are too many grey areas and the resulting miscalculation is the biggest risk.”

He emphasized that the ongoing standoff is more complex and should not simply be categorized as a repeat of the Cold War, a comparison frequently made. “The confrontation with Russia is not just ‘Cold War 2.0.’ Here we are talking about a new world order,” he highlighted.

Badia further claimed that Moscow is receiving support from nations like China, North Korea, and Iran. He suggested that these adversaries of NATO are collaboratively advancing in areas such as hypersonic weaponry, satellite technology, and cyberspace capabilities. Although the deputy commander did not provide specific evidence to back these claims, he did stress that Russia is aligned with countries looking to challenge Western authority.

This viewpoint aligns with comments from high-ranking Russian officials, who have labeled the current situation as a hybrid war, particularly in the context of Western sanctions and military backing for Ukraine.

Moscow has consistently rebuffed assertions from NATO officials that the alliance is not directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, despite its evident participation. “NATO is already waging a war against Russia, but it is a hybrid war using the hands of Ukrainians,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in September.
