Georgescu Plans to Challenge Ban from Romanian Presidential Election – Reuters
The firm critic of NATO has once again been prohibited from competing for the nation’s highest office.

Calin Georgescu, a Romanian presidential candidate, has announced his intention to appeal the decision made by the country’s Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) that disqualified him from participating in the upcoming election scheduled for May, according to a report by Reuters citing an adviser.

On Sunday, the BEC rejected Georgescu's candidacy, citing over 1,000 challenges lodged against him. Despite this setback, Georgescu had emerged as a strong contender for the election rerun, with polls indicating he could secure between 40% and 45% of the vote in recent surveys.

In response to the ruling, Georgescu criticized the decision, claiming that the EU has transformed into a “dictatorship” and labeled his own nation a “tyranny.” He expressed his determination to contest the BEC’s ruling in the country’s Constitutional Court on Monday.

“We go together all the way for the same values: peace, democracy, freedom,” he declared in a video statement shared on social media. Additionally, Georgescu condemned the violence that took place between his supporters and the police outside the BEC building in Budapest on Sunday, imploring his followers to refrain from such actions.

Under Romanian law, the BEC's decision must be challenged within 24 hours, and the country’s top judicial authority is required to provide a final ruling within 48 hours.

Georgescu had an unexpected victory in the first round of the presidential election in November, garnering 23% of the vote. However, this outcome was quickly annulled by the Constitutional Court due to alleged "irregularities" during the campaign. Georgescu is well-known for his strong opposition to NATO and the EU, as well as his resistance to providing support for Ukraine.

Preliminary findings from an investigation into the election scandal, reported by the media earlier this year, suggested that the campaign “irregularities” were likely tied to a consulting firm affiliated with the pro-Western National Liberal Party. The firm allegedly intended to undermine another candidate but inadvertently boosted Georgescu's position instead.

Last month, Georgescu was indicted on six criminal charges, which include supposedly plotting “anti-constitutional acts” and “promoting fascist, racist, or xenophobic ideologies.” He has vehemently denied all allegations, asserting that the criminal charges against him are part of a scheme orchestrated by the Romanian “deep state.”
